Have you ever tried on an outfit with high expectations, only to realize it doesn’t look quite the way you imagined? Almost instantly, the inner talk starts rolling in….
My arms are too big.
Is that a roll?
I don’t look good in this.
Before you know it, the outfit is back on the hanger and you’re reaching for something safer, something familiar. Even though you may be dressed, you’re not fully satisfied because your heart was set on wearing the outfit you chose the first time.
At that moment, you can make either one of two choices. You can decide what needs to change so you can wear it with confidence next time, or you can quietly set it aside and move on. Often, we choose the latter.
Interestingly, we do the very same thing with the dreams and plans we’ve been preparing to step into. We carefully put the idea together, feel the excitement build, and just as we’re ready to move forward in faith, doubt speaks up….
What if no one’s ever done this before?
What if people don’t like it?
What if I fail?
Because these conversations happen internally, they’re hard to challenge. There’s no one standing beside us reminding us of our strengths, reassuring us that we’re capable, or telling us we look just fine. Just like the outfit, we slowly talk ourselves out of what we truly want and place the dream (or outfit) to the side without a second thought.
Here’s the good news: the voice that talks you out of something doesn’t get the final say. With awareness, courage, and a little faith, you can choose to try again. It is possible to silence the doubt, to seek truth over fear, and to step into what you once set aside.
Sometimes all it takes is the decision to look again, believe again, and “wear” the calling that was meant for you all along.
May we learn to wear our calling well,
T. Lew
