Once upon a time in a faraway land….see how quickly we travel when a story begins?
Not long ago, I found myself in a conversation that felt like walking in circles. I wasn’t trying to win or prove a point; I simply wanted the other person to see the situation from a different angle. When the conversation ended, I walked away feeling a bit deflated. Not because I was wrong, but because understanding never quite met us in the middle.
Later, I thought about the synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Each tells the same story, yet each writer offers a different perspective. Each book had different details and different emphasis but the same truth. I can almost bet that there was no debate over whose version was better, because together they formed a perfect picture for the reader.
As human beings, we often forget that we, too, are living out our own “gospels.” We may witness the same event, hear the same words, or experience the same situation, yet walk away with different interpretations. Our perspectives are shaped by our past. Sometimes, they can either be based on the the joys we’ve known, the wounds we’ve carried, and the lessons we’ve survived.
Those who’ve known more pain may, by default, guard their hearts and analyze situations through a careful lens. Those who’ve known more ease may see the world with optimism and light. And those who’ve lived somewhere in between often carry a grounded, practical view. None of these perspectives are wrong, they’re simply human.
The beauty lies in remembering that multiple angles don’t cancel out truth; they deepen it. When we allow room for another person’s perspective, we make space for empathy, growth, and grace. And sometimes, the greatest peace comes not from being understood, but from understanding.
According to my perspective,
